5 Free Sewing Patterns

5 Free Sewing Patterns

It’s no secret that sewing can be expensive. First you need a machine, then thread, then notions, then fabric and THEN you need a pattern! It adds up quickly, so when it’s possible to save some money I get pretty excited. There are some fantastic free PDF patterns provided by fabric stores and by pattern companies themselves. When I say free I mean they don’t cost yout any money. That being said, you do frequently have to sign up for their newsletter, so bear that in mind if that's something you don’t feel comfortable with. Also it's good to note that it does cost the fabric store or pattern company valuable time and money to create each free pattern, so it's important to consider paying what you can when you can to keep these amazing resources available and their companies thriving. With that all said, here are my top 5 free patterns.

F|S

Fabric-store.com has dozens of free patterns, primarily designed for linen. They also sell great quality linen at an incredible price. Be sure to sign up for their email list as you frequently can get up to 38% off of select fabric.

1 -Monique

I have made this pattern and it has become a wardrobe staple. I used the fabric-store.com IL020 and it was perfect for the summer. I hope to make one out of a heavier linen for fall around the 5 oz/yd2).

Fit notes: the pattern is a little cropped so I have opted to add a couple of inches to mine. I love the boxy fit and ease of this blouse

Sewing Level: Beginner

Level up: I made mine with french seams due to the shearness of the fabric. I love how it looks inside and out and would recommend doing it if possible.

check out #simplelinentee on instagram to see other makes with this pattern.

2 - Anna Rose

This dress is so stunning, especially in this beautiful golden color. I think it's better than a basic dress without being too extra. It looks stunning in linen, but would work well with almost any woven fabric you can get your hands on.

Sewing Level: Advanced Beginner (buttons, pleats, binding)

Level up: Use fabric covered buttons for a more classic style

3 - Paola

The Paola Workwear Jacket is a sewing community favorite. I honestly don’t think this photo does it justice. I have seen many made from flannel, old blankets, denim, linen and canvas. They all look so different and each look great. Its such a versatile pattern and ticks all the boxes for a trendy “shacket” if thats what you are looking for.

Sewing Level: Advanced Beginner (buttons, patch pockets, collar)

Level Up: for the ultimate shacket look consider changing the hem to a scoop in the front and back.

Be sure to look at the #paolaworkwearjacket as there are 1000+ posts about it with so much inspiration.

4 - Loungewear Set

This my favorite Peppermint Magazine free pattern. The cropped boxy top and wide legged trousers are simple, elegant and so relaxed. I have made this pattern with bubble gauze from Joann and it is really comfortable. I love that I can lounge it it, but I can also wear it out and about. I think it’s great in linen as well or cotton for a more casual look.

Sewing Level: Beginner

Level Up: I don’t think this pattern needs to be leveled up…its loungewear!

Check out #peppermintloungewear for more inspiration

5 - Wide Leg Pants

These pants are so well done. Its no secret people are loving wide legged pants right now, and these check all the boxes. I love the high waisted rise and the slightly cropped fit of these. I’m genuinely surprised I haven’t made these before and now I want to make 5 pairs

Sewing Level: Intermediate (pants, zipper fly, buttons, darts, slash pockets)

Level Up: No need, they are perfect.

The hashtag #peppermintwidelegpants has so many good pictures…I would argue better than this one to show you the fit and style.

I hope this gives you a better idea of where to find free sewing patterns and how you can use them to build an everyday wardrobe. Each pattern above is something I believe could be a wardrobe staple for years to come.
